What Is Dabu Print?

Dabu is a mud-resist hand block printing process in which wooden blocks are used to create patterns. The process starts with preparing the mud resist. The earth is finely sieved, and lime (chuna), wheat husk (beedan) and gum (gond) are the main ingredients that make the mud resist the dye. Mud from a dry lake bed is soaked in water overnight in a separate tank, and the resist is freshly prepared before each printing. The beedan, gond and mud are kneaded into a sticky paste.

The paste is printed on the fabric with wooden blocks. The fabric is then dyed in indigo, and the paste resists the dye, so the pattern stays light against the blue.
